How Do I Set Preferences for Assess Tests?

The A+LS system's Assess tests use a smart testing engine. In addition to delivering and grading test questions it is able to adjust itself to the student's level of knowledge (discussed further below). It can also identify those lessons that contain content that the student failed to master, then assign those lessons to the student. Please keep in mind that you can override default settings when you assign Assess tests to students. If you are configuring NEW tests, then these setting will not affect previously assigned tests.

  1. Decide if Assess as going to be used most often as a pre-test or a posttest, then click on the radio button that represents your choice.

In addition to recording the test score, Assess tracks the content that the student failed to master. It can report these detailed results and prescribe the appropriate lessons to the student. You have the choice of how lessons are assigned to the students, or not to assign them at all.

  2. Consider the prescription options, then use the mouse to select the appropriate radio button setting.

Assess tests are able to adjust themselves to the student's level of knowledge. You can set how far up and down the grade levels the test will follow student performance during a test. For example, if a student doesn't understand a set of four digit multiplication problems, the test will trace the content strand and find that two digit multiplication is a prerequisite from the previous grade level. So the test will automatically revert one grade level, then offer two digit-based questions. If the student still fails, the test may drop back again and offer a single digit-based questions. Students who easily answer all of a type of question (like multi digit multiplication) will be presented with a next grade level challenge from the same content strand.

Hint - It is strongly recommended that you either limit the number of grade levels to no more than 1 or 2 or limit the testing to a VERY small number of lessons/content. This is because for each grade level the test will expand the number of questions asked. If you are testing over a several lessons worth of content, then a test set to roam 5 grade levels could take a student the better part of a day to complete. Most teachers find the default setting of "1" to be appropriate for typical use.

  3. If you need to change Advance or revert testing... level, then type the new number in the text box (must be a number from 0 to 99).

  4. Either, click on the Finished button to retain your changes and return to the previous menu.

            OR

Click on the Undo My Changes button, which returns the settings to the state they were in when you first opened this page.

            OR

Click on the Cancel button to return to the previous menu without saving your changes.
