The Management Toolbar Commands

The toolbar at the top of the screen (see figure below) contains the primary management commands. The number of buttons can vary depending on what management rights have been assigned to you. Not shown in the graphic below is the Administration button, whose functions are reserved for A+LS system administrator.

Clicking on one of the underlined links below will take you to the help for the command. The help screen will cover the command's main menu and its options.

Set Up Users - All user oriented commands are found here. Whether you want to add a new user, modify an existing one, inactivate a user, or delete them from the system this is the command to choose.

Set Up Classes - Selecting this button will enable you to add a new class, assign users, inactivate or delete classes.

Set Up Assignments - Assignments are at the heart of the A+LS management system. Set Up Assignments gives you access to creating and modifying assignments and assignment lists. It also provides the means to set or change your assignment related preferences, such as how new assignment lists will appear to your students.

Check and Set Progress - Student progress can be monitored and assignments graded via this command. You select whose progress to review or grade by class, then by student name, assignment list, and finally by assignment activity. This command also leads to the page where essays are graded. Please note that progress reports are generated using the View and Print Reports command (below).

View and Print Reports - You can select from dozens of preformatted reports. You can browse an on screen version of the report or select to generate a printer friendly version or export the information. Exported information is handy if you want to do further analysis in a third party program, for example in Microsoft Excel.

Log Off Users - If a student user is active when it shouldn't be, you can terminate the user's connection to the A+LS server. This situation can occur when a student turns off their computer while still connected to the A+LS system. Take great care with this command since you can log off a student who is legitimately on the system, perhaps even in the middle of a test.

Log Off - Allows you to quit the management system and return to the log on screen. Please note that you should always log off before you close your browser.

Preview Lessons - Just as with paper-based academic materials, teachers need to review A+LS lesson content prior to assigning it to students. Preview Lessons enables you to view any assignment as a student would.

Help - Found in the upper-right on the toolbar, you clicked on it to get to the help windows. These help pages are designed to support first time users with a broad range of computer experience.

Hint - If you move to a page that is all white, it is probably just a minor Internet problem.

  1. Point your cursor to the middle of the white area, then right click the mouse (Macintosh single button mice use [Control] click).

          A pop-up menu will open.

  2. Select Back from the pop-up menu.

This will take you back to the previous page. Now you can redo what you were trying when you got the white page.

WARNING: Never choose Refresh or on Windows computers tap the [F5] key, they will log you off the A+LS system.
