An Essay is like a fill-in question because it needs a written answer. The answer might be just a few words or it may need a few paragraphs. Always read the question carefully before starting your answer. After you have finished typing your answer, you should read the question again to make sure your answer is complete.

This help page covers:

How Do I Answer Essay Questions?

An Essay works like a fill-in question with a big box to type in.

  1. Click or tap inside the large white box that fills most of the screen.

Selecting the large white box will put the text cursor (tall thin black bar) in the upper left corner.

  2. Type in your answer.

Read the question again to make sure you have written a good answer. Change your answer if you need to.

  3. Select the Save button, found on the toolbar.

The screen will redraw itself, but there is no on-screen message.

Hint - Save often to avoid losing your work if your connection is lost.

  4. Select the X on the toolbar to exit when you are done.

Essays have to be graded by your teacher, so it may be a day or two before you can see your score. Your score will be listed in your Progress report for the class.

Why am I Back in This Lesson? I Thought I had Exited It.

If you saw the message "Resuming your previous A+LS session" when you logged on, you were returned to your previously saved session and the last assignment you worked on. These stateless sessions are normally saved when you abruptly lose your connection to the A+LS server. They are also saved if you shut down the browser without exiting the software properly.

You should never close your browser when exiting a lesson until after you've seen the "Exiting Curriculum Module" screen. If you shutdown the browser too soon, it will save the session and later return you to the lesson you thought you had exited. This will also happen if you try to refresh the browser ([F5] in Windows systems).

How Do I Quit from an Essay?

Click on X on the toolbar to exit and return to the Select an activity page. But normally you should wait until you have finished your answer and saved it.

What Does the Toolbar Do?

All lesson related student help pages also include a section on the lesson activity toolbar. It describes each button and its functionality.
