Overview of Checking and Setting Progress

The Progress portion of the A+LS management system functions a bit differently than the other major sections, such as the Users, Classes, or Assignments. Rather than presenting you with several menu options, you start at the first step of a single process. You'll be able to review progress (test results, lesson completion and mastery, etc.), set lessons as completed, and/or grade essays.

There are five major steps through the complete process, though you'll only need to go through all of them if you wish to grade an essay. While this may initially seem daunting, the steps are simple and logical and will become quite natural with practice.

The five steps through Check and Set Progress are:

Step 1 - Selecting the Student and Assignment List to Check

Step 2 - Reviewing the Progress Report

Step 3 - View Essay

Step 4 - Review and Comment on Essay

Step 5 - Score Essay

Step 1 - Selecting the Student and Assignment List to Check

The first task is to identify the student and assignment list that you want to check. Additionally you will have the option to mark the assignment completed. Manually marking an assignment as completed overrides the A+LS system settings (as the teacher you always have the final say).

  1. If necessary, click on the Select the school... drop box, and select your school.

  2. Click on the Select the class... drop box, opening it.

If a scroll bar appears in any drop box, then it means there are more options than can be shown in the box. Use the scroll bar to browse down the list until you find the correct selection and click on it.

Only your classes should appear in the list. If the desired class does not appear in the list then it is assigned to a log-on name other than the one you are currently using.

Hint - This is a typical problem for the A+LS system administrator who looks for a class but can't find it listed. It is common to forget that only teachers assigned to a specific class can access its information.

  3. Click on the desired class in the Select the class... drop box.

  4. Click on the Select the student... drop box, use the scroll bar if necessary to find the appropriate student, then click on the name.

  5. Click on the Select an assignment list drop box, again use the scroll bar if necessary to find the appropriate list, then click it.

Note the legend in the lower left corner of the page. It defines the (C) and (M)codes (note that (M) only appears if an assignment list is specified). Assignment lists can only achieve a (C), but assignments can gain both the (C) and (M). Note that when both codes appear next to an assignment, then the selected student has not only (C)ompleted the Study portion of the lesson but they have also (M)astered the Mastery test and Essay (if one is available).

The next step is optional, decide if you want to Set this assignment list as completed. Please note that assignments can be marked as mastered on the next page.

  6. Optional - If you have decided that the student has completed the assignment, even though he or she hasn't satisfied the predetermined requirements, then place a checkmark in the Set this assignment list as completed checkbox.

  7. Either, if your goal was simply to mark the assignment list (C)omplete then you may choose one of the Management Toolbar commands to exit the page.

            OR

Click on the Select an assignment drop box, use the scroll bar if necessary to find the appropriate assignment, then click it.

  8. Click on the Continue button to proceed to the next step Reviewing the Progress Report.
