This help page covers:

How Do I Set Preferences for ALS Lesson Assignments?

This page gives you the opportunity to setup pretests, allow students who master the pretest to skip the lesson, and define what lesson elements students can access after completion. If you are setting preferences for NEW assignments, please keep in mind that these setting only affect assignments and assignment lists created after you change the settings. You can override these settings at the time you assign a lesson to a student.

Hint - It is critical to consider all of the ramifications of a setting before implementing it. For example, forcing a student to do assignment lists in order and then setting assignment list prerequisites can prevent the student from having access to any assignments (if the order is pointing to a specific assignment list but the student has not yet done a prerequisite list, found later in the order). A+LS provides you with unparalleled control over student users, but that same power can paint your students into a corner. To minimize problems try out new settings on a test user before applying them to your real students.

This page uses a combination of checkboxes (basically on/off switches) and text boxes. If you want a selection or function to be turned on (enabled) then click in the checkbox and put a checkmark there. If you want to turn off a function then click on the checkmark and it will disappear, disabling the function. To set the number of pretest questions or the mastery score you simply type the desired number into the text box.

  1. Read the Administer a pretest... statement, then consider whether or not you want to have it turned on or off (enabled/disabled).

  2. Click on the top checkbox to enable (with checkmark) or disable (without checkmark) the pretest, which ever represents your choice.

If you plan to give a pretest, then you might want to consider the pretest as a form of quiz and keep the number of questions relatively low. Many teachers find the default value of "10" to be adequate. If you agree, then you don't need to change the text box's value.

  3. If you have enabled pretests, then type the number of questions into the text box (the default value in the text box is "10").

Frequently pretests are given to allow a student to test out of a lesson. Understandably this is a very popular option for students. It allows them to prove their mastery of a lesson immediately and move on to more challenging lessons.

  4. If you have enabled pretests, you need to decide if your students can use mastery of the pretest to skip the lesson.

  5. Click on the second checkbox to enable (with checkmark) or disable (without checkmark) skip this lesson, which ever represents your choice.

  6. If you have enabled skipping of lessons, then type the score required for mastery into the text box (a percentage, it must be a number between 0 and 100, do not include the "%" symbol).

The final group of settings on this page deals with what lesson activities will be available to the student after they have completed the lesson and its activities. Many teachers encourage students to review prior lesson content, but prefer to limit access to test questions. For them the only box to be checked (enabled) would be the one next to Study.

  7. Place a checkmark next to each lesson activity student can access after the lesson has been completed.

  8. When you have finished with the settings you can either:

Click on the Finished button to save your changes and return to previous menu.

            OR

Select the Advanced Assignment Settings button, which loads the Set advanced preferences for assignments page.

            OR

Choose the Undo My Changes button, which returns the settings to the state they were in when you first opened this page.

            OR

Click on the Cancel button to return to the previous menu without saving your changes.
