This help page covers:

How Do I Set Advanced Preferences for ALS Lesson Assignments?

Normally students can move through a lesson's activities at will, for example choosing to do the Essay before the Practice test. On this preference page you can force the student to step through the activities in the order specified. You can also define the completion requirements for the lesson. If you are setting preferences for a NEW assignment, please keep in mind that these settings only affect assignments created after you change the settings. You can override these settings at the time you assign a lesson to a student.

Warning - You may have noticed hints about taking care with your settings, but it is especially critical on this page. You must consider all of the ramifications of your settings before implementing them. It is quite easy to set the order to access in such a way that it is impossible to access any test activity. For example, if you set the Essay so that the student must complete the Mastery Test first, and set the Mastery Test so that the Essay must be done first, then neither will ever be available and it will be impossible for the student to complete the assignment. So it is essential that you test these settings on a test user before applying them to your real students.

This preferences page makes extensive use of
checkboxes, which are basically on/off switches. If you want a selection to be turned on (enabled) then click in the checkbox and put a checkmark there. If you want to turn off a function then click on the checkmark and it will disappear, disabling the selection.

  1. Carefully consider the In order to access settings, then carefully consider each of the three sets of activity options (each with its own set of checkboxes).

In order to access allows you to set the order that students must do the individual lesson activities. For example, if you want your students to always do the Study before tackling the tests or Essay, then you would enable Study as a prerequisite for each of the three activities.

Note that there are just two choices for Practice Test (Study and Essay), and three choices for Mastery Test and Essay. You can have more than one box checked for each of the activities but take great care (please read the warning above if you haven't already).

  2. Click on the checkbox(es) to enable or disable the prerequisite activities, so they represent your choices.

The next set of options, The lesson will be considered mastered when the following are completed allows you to choose what activity or activities must be mastered for the lesson to be considered complete. By default only Mastery Test must be mastered for a lesson to be considered complete. If you are forcing the order lessons are completed this means that student can proceed to the next lesson after a successful Mastery Test.

Hint - It is recommended that you do NOT check (enable) the Essay option. If you enable it then the student cannot complete the lesson until you have manually graded the Essay. For some home users this option has resulted in long delays where the student can't move on to new lessons because the teacher has not yet graded their Essay (when used in conjunction with the force order of lessons and only see current lesson options).

Hint - If you have decided that Study must be completed before the other activities then it doesn't matter if you check the considered mastered Study box. This is because the student can't get to the Mastery Test without doing the Study. So it is an implied requirement. But you will want to select the Define Completion button after making all of your selections on this page.

  3. Place a checkmark next to each of the activities that must be completed for the lesson to be considered mastered.

  4. When you have finished setting checkboxes you can either:

Click on the Define Completion button to go to the Define completion rules for new assignments page (advised if you changed the lesson will be considered mastered... settings).

            OR

Click on the Finished button to retain your changes and return to the previous menu.

            OR

Click on the Undo My Changes button, which returns the settings to the state they were in when you first opened this page.

            OR

Click on the Cancel button to return to the previous menu without saving your changes.
