How Do I Define Completion Rules for ALS Lesson Assignments?

You can choose from three typical measurements:

Total minutes - An example would be forcing the students to spend time in the Study activity. So setting Study to Total minutes >= 5 would require a student to be in the content for at least 5 minutes. Beware of setting this number too high. While some lessons (notably in the Social Sciences) have a lot of reading other lessons emphasize Practice activities and are thus short on reading. Too high a number and the student will be stuck in a lesson without enough work to keep them busy, just waiting for the clock to tick by.

Accesses - Infrequently used for judging mastery of A+LS lessons because simply accessing activities is a poor measure of mastery. Most often used for judging non-computer activities.

Score - The default value of >=80 (greater than or equal to 80) means that the student would have to score 80% or higher to have completed the activity (Practice Test, Mastery Test, and Essay). For obvious reasons you should never set Study to score since it is impossible to grade Study.

It is important to note that you only need to make changes to the activities that were enabled for mastery on the previous page (Set Advanced Preferences for A+LS Lesson Assignments). The default is to have only Mastery Test enabled.

  1. Click on the first drop box you want to change and select the appropriate measurement (Total minutes, Accesses, or Score).

  2. In the corresponding text box type the appropriate number.

When you type in the values please keep in mind the following limitations:

Total minutes - Must be a number between 0 and 99.

Accesses - Typically a single digit number.

Score - A percentage, thus a number between 0 and 100, but do not include the "%" sign.

  3. Repeat the process for each activity's drop box and text box that you will use to measure mastery.

  4. Either, click on the Finished button to retain your changes and return to the previous menu.
