Overview of Checking and Setting Progress

There are five major steps through the complete Progress process, though you'll only need to go through all of them if you wish to grade an essay. The current page deals with steps 3 and 5, transiting to the essay and upon your return to this page, scoring it.

The five steps through Check and Set Progress are:

Step 1 - Selecting the Student and Assignment List to Check

Step 2 - Reviewing the Progress Report

Step 3 - View Essay

Step 4 - Review and Comment on Essay

Step 5 - Score Essay

Step 3 - View Essay

When you first enter the Read and Score Essay page there is nothing to do but note the instructions at the top of the page, then go straight to the student's Essay.

  1. Click on the View Essay button.

The student interface will appear and display the current assignment's Essay (Step 4 - Review and Comment on Essay).

When you have finished reviewing the Essay you'll want to return to this page and score it. Just click on Save to save your comments, then Exit on the toolbar (right side).

Step 5 - Score Essay

You've reviewed the Essay, saved your comments, and returned to the Read and Score Essay page. Now you want to record a score. The scoring functions are at the bottom of the page.

  1. Click your mouse on the Score text box, placing the thin black text cursor there.

The score must be a percentage between 0 and 100. Please do not type in the "%". Letter grades are not accepted by the system.

  2. Type in the score for the Essay.

The next item is optional. All Mastery tests and Essays have mastery score levels set (for example, 80). If the Essay's score is above the mastery level then the A+LS system will automatically mark the Essay as (M)astered. In other words, a score of 85 would receive a (M)astery if the mastery level setting was 80, but a score of 78 would not. You can override this mastery level setting by checking the Essay is mastered... checkbox.

  3. Optional - Click on the Essay is mastered... checkbox if appropriate and the score falls below the normal mastery level setting.

  4. Click on the Finished button to record the score and return to the Check and Set Progress page.

A message box appears informing you that the "Assignment was successfully scored."

  5. Click OK to proceed.

You've returned to the lesson's Check and Set Progress page.

  6. Either, click on the Finished button to view the progress of another student.

            OR

Click on one of the Management Toolbar commands to proceed with other tasks.
