Overview of Creating a New Assignment List

There are six major steps through the process of creating a new assignment list. You'll only need to go through all of them if you wish change the default assignment list settings. While this may initially seem daunting, the steps are simple and logical and will become quite natural with practice.

The six steps through creating a new assignment list are:

Step 1 - Name and Assign the List to a Class

Step 2a - Add Lessons by Subject

Step 2b - Add Lessons by Standard

Step 3 - Settings for Assignment Lists

Step 4 - Deciding to Add More Lessons or Assign List to Students

Step 5 - Assign Students to the Assignment List

You may have noticed that there are two Step 2s. This is because you have a choice when adding lessons to the list. You can add them conventionally, selecting a subject module (such as Mathematics V), then a lesson from the module (such as Decimals 2). You can also add them by standard (such as the Arizona Academic Standards). Typically a teacher will favor one method over the other, but you can create a list with lessons from both sources.

Hint - You can view the content of all lessons as a student would by using the Preview Lessons command on the toolbar.

Step 2b - Add Lessons By Standard

This is the first of two pages where you add lessons from standards to the current assignment list. On this page you will select the standard(s), typically a state's academic standard. On the second page you will choose the standard related ALS Lessons and place them in the assignment list.

In the top four drop boxes you will select the standard then drill down to the appropriate curriculum level to pick the specific academic element that is associated with lessons.

  1. Click on the top drop box, Select a standard set, opening it.

  2. Using the scroll bar, click on the desired standard.

The screen may flicker as you make your selections. This happens when the system updates the data on page based on your most recent selection. It is normal.

  3. Click on the Select a curriculum area drop box, then click on desired subject.

If there are no available selections then the standard may not currently cover the curriculum area selected.

  4. Working down, use the Select a standard subset drop box and make your choice.

  5. In the final drop box Select a curriculum level, click on the appropriate level.

You have identified the specific portion of the standard you are interested in. Now the Available Standards text box should be displaying the specific standards that are directly referenced to sets of A+LS lessons (if related lessons exist).

  6. Using the scroll bar if necessary, review the Available Standards, and click on your first choice.

Note that when you highlighted the standard the Add button lit up.

  6. Click on the Add button to copy the highlighted standard to the Selected Standards text box.

  7. Select additional standards from the left text box and use the Add button to add them to the right text box.

If you are building a cross curricular assignment list then you may need lessons from other standard sets. It's easy to add them on this screen. An assignment list can be made up of as many lessons from as many standards as you would like.

  8. Optional - If additional standards are needed from other standard sets, then return to the first step and add them to the current list of Selected Standards.

While you could adjust List Setttings at this point it is not an opportune time. It is recommended that you complete the process of adding lessons by standard before changing any settings. You will have several opportunities later to make adjustments.

  9. When all of the desired standards have been selected click on the Continue button.

            OR

Click on the Cancel button to return to the previous menu without saving your changes.

It is recommended that you do not select List Settings at this time. Wait until you have completed the current process of adding lessons.

On the next page you will choose the standard related A+LS lessons and place them in the assignment list.
