Overview of Creating a New Assignment List

There are six major steps through the process of creating a new assignment list. You'll only need to go through all of them if you wish change the default assignment list settings. While this may initially seem daunting, the steps are simple and logical and will become quite natural with practice.

The six steps through creating a new assignment list are:

Step 1 - Name and Assign the List to a Class

Step 2a - Add Lessons by Subject

Step 2b - Add Lessons by Standard

Step 3 - Settings for Assignment Lists

Step 4 - Deciding to Add More Lessons or Assign List to Students

Step 5 - Assign Students to the Assignment List

You may have noticed that there are two Step 2s. This is because you have a choice when adding lessons to the list. You can add them conventionally, selecting a subject module (such as Mathematics V), then a lesson from the module (such as Decimals 2). You can also add them by standard (such as the Arizona Academic Standards). Typically a teacher will favor one method over the other, but you can create a list with lessons from both sources.

Hint - You can view the content of all lessons as a student would by using the Preview Lessons command on the toolbar.

Step 2b - Add Lessons by Standard

This is the second of two pages where you add lessons from standards to the current assignment list. On the first page you selected the standard(s). On this page you will choose the standard related ALS Lessons and place them in order in the assignment list.

The first task is to decide what kind of assignment you want to add to the list. By far the most common type is ALS Lessons.

  1. Click on the Select the type of assignment... drop box, opening it.

  2. Click on the type of assignment you want.

For the purposes of this help it is assumed that you clicked on the most common type, ALS Lessons. However the process for all types is very similar.

Two factors govern what appears in the left text box at this time. The first factor is whether or not your school has purchased the subject modules associated with the standard. If you don't own the appropriate subject module then the related lessons can't appear. The second factor is whether or not any lessons exist that could be cross referenced with the standard.

  3. Using the scroll bar if necessary, review the list of lessons in the left text box, then click on one to select it.

Did you notice that when you clicked on the lesson the Add button between the two text boxes lit up?

Hint - You can view the content of any lesson as a student would by using the Preview Lesson button at the bottom of the page.

  4. Click on the Add button to add the highlighted lesson to the assignment list.

The lesson was added to the right text box, which displays the lessons currently in the assignment list.

Please note that while you can use the Select all lessons in this list checkbox to add all of a subject module's lessons to an assignment list please take care. This function works best when there are only a few lessons listed. You may want to avoid creating an assignment list with dozens of lessons, as they tend to be overwhelming to all but the most stout hearted students.

Hint - You can select multiple lessons:

After selecting the first lesson, hold down the [Ctrl] key and click on additional lessons (Macintosh users should hold down the [Apple] key). Notice how they also become highlighted.

You can also select a range of lessons (a contiguous group). Select the first one that appears in the list (starting at the top). Hold down the [Shift] key, then select the bottom-most lesson of the group. The entire group should now appear highlighted and ready to Add.

  5. Select additional lessons from the left text box and use the Add button to add them to the assignment list (as displayed in the right text box).

You may have noticed that the additional lessons are just being tacked onto the end of the list in the right text box. The next task is to put the assignment list lessons in order.

  6. In the right text box, click on a lesson that is out of order (needs to be moved up or down list).

The lesson that needs to be moved should be highlighted.

  7. Clicking on the Move Up or Move Down buttons, move the lesson into place.

  8. Repeat the moving process on each lesson until the assignments are in the appropriate order for your students.

  9. When all lessons have been added and moved into the correct order, save the assignment list by clicking on the Save Order button.

10. Optional - If you want to modify the preferences for a single lesson, then highlight the lesson (in the right text box) and click on the Assignment Settings button at the bottom of the page.

The Set preferences for new assignments page will open. When you are done reviewing and/or changing the assignment settings, clicking on the Finished button will return you to the Add lessons by standard page.

11. Either, select the List Settings button and proceed to the next step of creating a new assignment list (Step 3 - Settings for Assignment Lists).

            OR

Click on the Continue button and skip step 3 and proceed to the following step (Step 4 - Deciding to Add More Lessons or Assign List to Student).

            OR

Click on the Add Review Test button to open Add new Review assignment.
