Adding lessons by subject allows you to select specific ALS Lessons from any available A+LS subject modules. You can create an assignment list populated by lessons from a single subject, such as Mathematics III, or create a cross curricular or project-based assignment list that draws lessons from several subjects. Once added to the assignment list the lessons can be reordered to present students with a logical progression based on their need and your experience.
In addition to ALS Lessons you can also add Assess, Non-Computer, and Other Computer lessons to an assignment list. There are a few preconfigured Assess tests, but most are created by teachers to address specific assessment needs. Non-Computer and Other Computer lessons are created at your school to integrate non A+LS activities into the A+LS management system. So if you don't find any lessons in these categories that is understandable.
• The first task is to decide what kind of assignment you want to add to the list. By far the most common type is ALS Lessons.
1. Click on the Select the type of assignment... drop box, opening it.
2. Click on the type of assignment you want.
• For the purposes of this help it is assumed that you clicked on the most common type, ALS Lessons. However the process for all types is very similar.
3. Click on the Select a subject drop box, opening it.
• The subjects that appear will directly reflect the A+LS subject titles that your school has purchased, plus any newly authored modules you or your fellow teachers have created.
4. Using the scroll bar if necessary, review the list of subjects, then click on one to select it.
• After some of your selections the screen will flicker as the page automatically updates itself. This is normal. Note that the list of lessons in the lower left text box was updated with lessons from the subject module you selected.
5. Using the scroll bar if necessary, click on a lesson in the left text box.
• Did you notice that when you clicked on the lesson the Add button between the two text boxes lit up?
6. Click on the Add button to add the highlighted lesson to the assignment list.
• The lesson was added to the right text box, which displays the lessons currently in the assignment list.
• Please note that while you can use the Select all lessons in this list checkbox to add all of a subject module's lessons to an assignment list it is not recommended. The assignment list would have several dozen lessons, overwhelming all but the most stout-hearted students.
Hint - You can select multiple lessons:
• After selecting the first lesson, hold down the [Ctrl] key and click on additional lessons (Macintosh users should hold down the [Apple] key). Notice how they also become highlighted.
• You can also select a range of lessons (a contiguous group). Select the first one that appears in the list (starting at the top). Hold down the [Shift] key, then select the bottom-most lesson of the group. The entire group should now appear highlighted and ready to Add.
7. Select additional lessons from the left text box and use the Add button to add them to the assignment list (as displayed in the right text box).
• If you are building a cross curricular assignment list then you will need lessons from other subject areas. It's easy to add them on this screen. All you have to do is return to the first step on this page to add additional lessons from another subject module. An assignment list can be made up of as many lessons from as many modules as you would like.
8. Optional - If additional lessons are needed from other assignment types and/or subject modules, then return to the first step and Add them to the current list.
• You may have noticed that the additional lessons are just being tacked onto the end of the list in the right text box. The next task is to put the assignment list lessons in order.
9. In the right text box, click on a lesson that is out of order (needs to be moved up or down list).
• The lesson that needs to be moved should be highlighted.
10. Clicking on the Move Up or Move Down buttons, move the lesson into place.
11. Repeat the moving process on each lesson until the assignments are in the appropriate order for your students.
12. When all lessons have been added and moved into the correct order, save the assignment list by clicking on the Save Order button.
13. Optional - If you want to modify the preferences for a single lesson, then highlight the lesson (in the right text box) and click on the Assignment Settings button at the bottom of the page.
• The Set preferences for new assignments page will open. When you are done reviewing and/or changing the assignment settings, clicking on the Finished button will return you to the Add lessons by subject page.
14. Either, select the List Settings button and proceed to the next step of creating a new assignment list (Step 3 - Settings for Assignment Lists).
OR
Click on the Continue button and skip step 3 and proceed to the following step (Step 4 - Deciding to Add More Lessons or Assign List to Student).
OR
Click on the Add Review Test button to open Add new Review assignment.
