Settings for Assignment List

Step 3 of Create a New Assignment List

This help page covers:
Please note that you can access this page from a number of different pages, both while creating a new list (hence the "Step 3" in the page title) and while editing an existing list.

Overview of Creating a New Assignment List

There are six major steps through the process of creating a new assignment list. You'll only need to go through all of them if you wish change the default assignment list settings. While this may initially seem daunting, the steps are simple and logical and will become quite natural with practice.

The six steps through creating a new assignment list are:

Step 1 - Name and Assign the List to a Class

Step 2a - Add Lessons by Subject

Step 2b - Add Lessons by Standard

Step 3 - Settings for Assignment Lists

Step 4 - Deciding to Add More Lessons or Assign List to Students

Step 5 - Assign Students to the Assignment List

You may have noticed that there are two Step 2s. This is because you have a choice when adding lessons to the list. You can add them conventionally, selecting a subject module (such as Mathematics V), then a lesson from the module (such as Decimals 2). You can also add them by standard (such as the Arizona Academic Standards). Typically a teacher will favor one method over the other, but you can create a list with lessons from both sources.

Hint - You can view the content of all lessons as a student would by using the Preview Lessons command on the toolbar.

Step 3 - Settings for Assignment List

Six assignment list preferences can be reviewed and changed on this page. They govern how students will see and access the current assignment list and its lessons.

Changing these settings will not effect your default preferences which are set through Set Preferences for New Assignment Lists (accessed through the first menu option on the Set Up Assignments page).

The top line of the page lists the name of the assignment list. Note that it appears in a text box. This means that you can edit the name if you wish.

  1. If you want to rename the assignment list, click in the text box and make your changes.

A pair of radio buttons present the choice between letting the students do the list's lessons in any order or forcing them to do lessons in order. Please note that this option is disabled for LLS assignment lists.

  2. Click on the radio button that represents your choice.

Immediately below the two radio buttons is a checkbox that governs access after completion. If the box is checked (enabled), then students will be able to return to a lesson after they have completed it.

  3. Click on the checkbox to either enable (checked) or disable (unchecked) student access after completion.

The next choice (the To access this list... drop box) is an option for the advanced user. It allows you to set a prerequisite list that has to be completed before access is granted to the current list. For users new to the A+LS system it is recommended that you simply put the assignment lists in the order that you want the students to pursue them.

Hint - It is critical to consider all of the ramifications of a setting before implementing it. For example, forcing a student to do assignment lists in order and then setting assignment list prerequisites can prevent the student from having access to any assignments (if the order is pointing to a specific assignment list but the student has not yet done a prerequisite list, found later in the order). A+LS provides you with unparalleled control over student users, but that same power can paint your students into a corner. To minimize problems try out new settings on a test user before applying them to your real students.

  4. Optional - Click on the To access this list... drop box to open it, then click on the assignment list that you wish to set as the prerequisite for the current list or on None to turn off prerequisites.

The Select which assignment lists... radio buttons offer four choices for defining what lessons to show to students:

All assignments - The student sees all assignments, even those that aren't currently accessible (due to prerequisites, etc.) and can move though all available assignments at will.

All assignments not mastered - The student can access all assignments that have unfinished activities (Study, Practice, Mastery, and/or Essay).

All available assignments - The student can see all available assignments and can move through them at will regardless of whether or not they have been completed.

Launch current assignment - Only the lesson the student is currently working on or set to current by the teacher is available. Please note that this option works in tandem with the next option that sets which lesson is current.

Please note that this option is disabled for LLS assignment lists.

  5. Click on the Select which assignments... radio button that you deem most appropriate.

If in the previous step you selected Launch current assignment, then you may want to choose the current lesson using the last option on the page (the Select the assignment to be designated the current assignment... drop box).

  6. Optional - Click on the Select the assignment to be designated the current assignment... drop box, then select the appropriate assignment or No Current Assignment to turn off this function.

  7. Click on the Finished button to return to the previous page.

            OR

Click on the Undo My Changes button to return to the page to its original settings.

            OR

Click on the Cancel button to return to the previous menu without saving your changes.
